Weight-Loss Surgery Candidacy — Information for Our Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery, Alabama Patients

Bariatric surgery can provide patients with a much more positive outlook on life. However, not everyone who is characterized as obese is a candidate for weight-loss surgery. At our Birmingham office, which serves Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and other areas of Alabama, our experienced bariatric surgeon, Dr. Andrew M. Dewitt, will help you determine if you are a candidate for one of our highly effective procedures.

In general, the best way to lose weight and reduce obesity-related health issues is to maintain a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise. Only when such measures prove ineffective is weight-loss surgery a viable option. It is important to remember that bariatric surgery is a serious operation requiring careful consideration. If you are deemed a candidate and decide to undergo bariatric surgery, it can provide consistent, long-term weight loss and a healthier, more active, and more fulfilling lifestyle overall.

Determining Whether You Are a Candidate for Weight-Loss Surgery

Although a person's Body Mass Index (BMI) cannot determine his or her overall health, it does give weight-loss specialists a starting point from which to evaluate a patient’s candidacy for weight-loss surgery. At our Birmingham practice serving Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and other areas of Alabama, Dr. Andrew M. Dewitt will be happy to guide you through the bariatric surgery decision-making process. You may also determine your body mass index using the BMI calculator on this page.

ft. in.
lbs
kg/m2
What does your BMI mean?
Underweight = < 20
Normal Weight = 20-30
Mildly Obese = 30-35
Severely Obese = 35-40
Morbidly Obese = 40+

Obesity is indicated by a BMI of 35 or above. A BMI of 40 or above shows extreme obesity. If an individual’s BMI is 40 or more, or if a BMI of 35 or more is accompanied by serious weight-related health issues (e.g., diabetes or high blood pressure), weight loss surgery may be an option. Other considerations — including a patient’s psychological readiness to undergo surgery and to commit to the required lifestyle changes — are also taken into account on a case-by-case basis.
