Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is the most frequently performed and well-recognized bariatric procedure in the U.S., and has proven to be an effective way to help individuals achieve and maintain life-changing weight-loss results. Our bariatric surgeon is proud to provide Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery to his many patients from Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and elsewhere in Alabama. Like other bariatric surgery procedures at our Birmingham office, the Roux-en-Y technique requires often serious lifestyle and dietary changes that should be discussed with Dr. Dewitt before patients elect to undergo surgery.

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a combined restrictive/malabsorptive weight-loss procedure. The restrictive portion of the surgery results in a reduction of the amount of food that a person can eat before his or her hunger is satisfied. At the same time, the malabsorptive component of the procedure limits how many calories the intestinal system is able to absorb during digestion, encouraging even further weight loss.
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery at the office of Dr. Andrew M. Dewitt — serving patients in Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and throughout Alabama — can often be performed as minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. This technique involves the creation of very small holes in the abdomen (resulting in minimal or no scarring), through which Dr. Dewitt is able to perform the entire procedure.
During Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, Birmingham, Alabama surgeon Andrew M. Dewitt reduces both the size of the stomach and the number of calories absorbed by the intestines. This is done primarily by creating a smaller stomach pouch. Since this causes people to feel full more quickly, they tend to stop eating sooner than they normally would. The smaller stomach pouch consists of the portion of the stomach that connects to the esophagus. As a result, food is redirected to bypass part of the lower bowel, which is where most calories are absorbed during digestion, thereby reducing caloric intake.
In preparing for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, Dr. Dewitt and his staff serving Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and all of Alabama fully prepare each patient for the most beneficial bariatric surgery recovery possible. Gastric bypass patients can expect to be up and out of bed the evening of their day of surgery. The total hospitalization period is typically three to four days, while the recovery period lasts about three to five weeks.
Like all surgery, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery involves certain risks. Our patients from Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and elsewhere in Alabama who are considering gastric bypass surgery will be fully informed of all risks associated with their procedure. Risks of the Roux-en-Y procedure include, but are not limited to, infection of the incision site, leakage from the stomach into the abdominal cavity, blood clotting in the lungs, vitamin deficiencies, nausea and vomiting, ulcers, and hernia. In extremely rare cases, gastric bypass surgery has involved fatal complications.
The only way to find out if you are a candidate for bariatric surgery is to have a thorough consultation with a surgeon.
